Child Custody
Divorce affects millions of individuals in the United States each year, including the children of divorcing parents. When parents divorce, difficult decisions about custody and living arrangements need to be made. If parents cannot work out a plan between themselves, then the courts will decide on one.

How Custody is Determined
In many cases, parents agree upon custody arrangements without court mediation. This may result from negotiations between the spouses and their attorneys, or from one parent’s willingness to let the other care for the couple’s children.
In some cases, though, parents are unwilling to concede custody to their spouses and fight for the right to care for their children. When this happens, the couple usually must attend a divorce court, which will make the final ruling on who gets custody of the children.
The court may take many factors into account when determining which parent is best suited to caring for the children, including both parents’ financial situations and personal histories. The parent that is not granted primary custody is usually granted visitation according to a schedule determined by the court.
